Markus Meier – My Patch Of Dirt Country

Markus Meier - My Patch Of Dirt

Raised in the Australian Outback in the Kimberley region of WA, Markus began his musical journey at the age of five teaching himself chords on the guitar from an old book given to him by his prospector father. By the age of 12 with his brother Paul they had formed a band called ‘The Territory Boys’, supporting some big name acts in their hometown Darwin including ‘Lee Kernaghan’ and ‘The Black Sorrows’ .

Markus later embarked on a solo career and in 2006 he caught the attention of one of Australia’s most successful producers, Garth Porter (Lee Kernaghan, James Blundell, etc). The 2 of them collaborated on his debut album ‘Raindance’, released in 2007, which achieved 4 chart singles including ‘In My Boots’ which reached #1 in Qld, #3 on the CMR National Chart & #6 on the European Chart.

Markus’ highly anticipated 2nd album ‘A Different Land’, again co-written and produced by Garth Porter, brings a dynamic new energy to Australian Music achieving so far two #1 singles on the CMR National Chart. ‘A Different Land’ also reached #1 on the Australian Country Albums ARIA Chart.

About this track…

Following on from the first two hugely successful singles off Markus’ second album, the ARIA Chart topper ‘A Different Land’, comes My Patch Of Dirt, an inspirational song about a lifetime on the land.

About this track…

A gospel inspired groovy track which Melbourne’s beat magazine say has the opiate-rich laconic elegance of Keef and Mick shooting the shit on a lazy Sunday afternoon

Ben Wells and The Middle Names – Old Sea Salt Folk

Ben Wells and The Middle Names - Old Sea Salt

Ben Wells and The Middle Names (BW&TMN) is the hottest band coming out of Hobart, and they are living up to the hype. Currently the band is only weeks away from releasing their highly anticipated new tracks ‘Old Sea Salt and ‘Lullaby’.

The past year has been an exciting rise for this young group lead by songwriter and front man Ben Wells. They were right at home on the main stage at Falls Festival Marion Bay 2010/11, playing to thousands including an eager few hundred who bustled for prime position against the barriers. Likewise, a similar energetic crowd greeted the band as they stepped on stage at MS Fest 2011, One Fine Day Fest 2011, and O Week 2011.

The band’s rise was noted at the 2010 Amplified Awards – Tasmania’s highest accolades for contemporary music – winning Emerging Artist of the Year, Indie/Pop Artist of the Year and Folk Artist of the Year.

BW&TMN has a legion of followers, both 18+ and underage, selling out shows in their home city Hobart with over 300 people attending.

They have toured Melbourne, with gigs at renowned venues The Espy and supporting The Little Stevies at the East Brunswick Club.

About this track…

Old Sea Salt infuses the bands instrumental and vocal characteristics in a metaphorical wave-like motion, producing particular feature moments intertwined with the story told by Ben’s strong lead vocal. Violin is a consistent feature throughout, giving the song its upbeat drive combined with the shuffle of percussion and acoustic guitar.

Busby Marou – Something for Me Folk, Indigenous

Busby Marou - Something for me

Promising new talent, Busby Marou, recorded at the 2010 National Country Music Muster in Gympie by Brisbane Country Music station, 98.9fm.

The band primarily consists of Thomas Busby and Torres Strait Islander Jeremy Marou.

Jeremy, a proud Torres Strait Islander, has rare musical talent. He is fluent on just about every instrument, including ukulele, bass, drums and piano – But it is his natural ability on the guitar that will make you stop and listen. His obvious exposure to the traditional Murray Island song and dance as a child shines though the melodies and combined with Thomas’ distinctly Australian way of sharing his stories, the pair have developed a unique and Australian song writing flavour.

From humble beginnings by the banks of the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Busby Marou are quickly making an impact on the Australian Music Scene.

About this track…

Cracking harmonies, breathtaking musicianship and a natural feel for each others guitars!!

Only The Sea Slugs – Big Sky Pop, Rock

Only The Sea Slugs - Big Sky

Sydney rockers Only The Sea Slugs are proud to unveil their new single ‘Big Sky’, the first track to be lifted from their forthcoming mini album ‘Street Music’, due out later this year.

A rollicking, haphazardly timed narrative germinating from a simple guitar line, ‘Big Sky’ speaks of the bizarre loneliness of living in a big city. As singer / guitarist Sasha puts it, it’s “basically a tune about chasing your tail in a large city, and letting go of useless s**t.”

‘Big Sky’ and the upcoming ‘Street Music’ marks the first official release from Only The Sea Slugs since their debut EP
‘Dreamstate’ was released in 2009. Heralded for their brooding, enchanting sound and their absorbing live presence, ‘Dreamstate’ followed a highly-prized collection of demos and singles that saw the band garner themselves a “Band to Watch” status in and around Sydney and indeed, nationally. Their 2007 recording ‘You’re The Reason Drugs Are Useless’, plus their 2008 track ‘We, The Odd One’ picked up strong play everywhere Triple J and FBi through to College Radio in the US, France, Italy and the UK.

But now, the attention turns to brand new single ‘Big Sky’ and the forthcoming ‘Street Music’.

About this track…

Timothy Nelson & the Infidels - You Don't Know What You're Waiting For

Perth based 5 piece Timothy Nelson & The Infidels have just announced the release of their new single ‘You Don’t Know What You’re Waiting For’, the 2nd track to be pulled from their forthcoming debut album “I Know This Now” (out April 2011).

Only 20 years old, Nelson has taken home the coveted WAMi ‘Song Of The Year’ Award twice (2007 and 2009) and he and his Infidels have been busy. Interspersed with their own headline shows, the last eighteen months has seen the band support the likes of Birds Of Tokyo, Katie Noonan & The Captains, Whitley, Lior and Clare Bowditch, to name but a few.

With engineer James Newhouse, Nelson and his Infidels have just completed work on their debut album “I Know This Now”. Final mastering is currently being completed at Abbey Road Studios in London with the album slated for an early 2011 release. Though a couple of tracks had been circulated around Perth, in August of this year the band officially released their debut single Nothings In Tune as an introduction to the rest of Australia:

About this track…

New single ‘You Don’t Know What You’re Waiting For’ is – in Nelson’s own words “basically about growing up and in doing so, understanding that it’s you that has to make and be responsible for any changes that need to be made in your own life”

Stiff Gins – Yandoo Folk, Indigenous

Stiff Gins - Yandool
On the verge of their third album release, Stiff Gins Nardi Simpson and Kaleena Briggs have much to celebrate. Eleven years ago, their moniker was reclamation of an offensive reference to Aboriginal women, a banner to guide their music in the direction of strength and pride. each of the eleven tracks on Wind & Water capture moments and turning points in the women’s lives.

Their trademark harmonies still shine, but they’re met with sophistication in their songwriting that can only be found after a decade of making music together.
They have travelled the world, received prestigious awards, and created a loyal fan base with their heartfelt songs and emotive performances.

They’ve performed in the Middle East and remote communities across Australia, and developed a musical friendship that has transformed them both. Now, with their new album Wind & Water, they have perfected a sound that honours the raw power of their voices and their history while leading them firmly into the future of Australian music.

‘Wind & Water knew what it was long before we did,’ says Nardi, ‘it was just waiting for us to catch up! ’ Kaleena Briggs

About this track…

PJ Wolf – Father’s Son Pop

PJ Wolf - Father's Son

PJ Wolf finds bios either make him sound cooler than he is, or alternatively; in trying to achieve exactly that end, far less cool than he’d like people to imagine him. That being said…

Drawing on an eclectic range of musical influences from Erik Satie to Bob Dylan, PJ Wolf explores the beautiful, the terrible and the profound through his unique alt-pop sound.

In 2008 PJ was a winner of the triple J unearthed Top Song competition. His winning track was described on the Unearthed website as:

“… indie pop… while still being serious. And Seriously Good. The quirky instrumentation and lush harmonies make PJ’s winning track “Skin And Bone” a standout winner”

This win came after a number of his demo’s were picked up and played on the station. Just prior to receiving the Triple J honour, PJ was awarded a grant from the Foundation for Young Australians to produce his current EP Arcadia Street, a collection of pop songs about death.

A gifted singer, producer and songwriter, PJ is a singular voice in the Australian music scene. He can be heard bringing life to laments and lullabies at venues across the country.

About this track…

Produced by renowned Engineer/Producer Matt Redlich (Hungry Kids of Hungry, Ball Park Music), Father’s Son is a darkly quirky pop song recorded directly to 2 inch tape with PJ playing all of the instruments…

It’s new-old school!

Hudson – Against The Grain Folk, Pop

Hudson - Against The Grain

Having only been penning tunes since mid-2010, Hudson has achieved a considerable amount in his fledgling music career, and things don’t look to be slowing down either. With his debut EP, Open Up Slowly in hand (digitally released Jan 2011), he is set for an Australian national launch tour in April & May of this year.

Part folk, part pop, his music sits nicely somewhere in between, and he cites Badly Drawn Boy, Bon Iver and Iron & Wine as some of his main influences.

Post launch, he’s taking his show to the streets with his ‘Back to Basics Busking Tour’, leaving Melbourne on June 1st and hitting the pavement in most major cities in New Zealand, United States, Canada, UK, Denmark, France, Germany & Spain. “I’m damn exited to get busking with my songs, to experience the thrill and randomness of performing at the most grass roots level and to share my tunes with an ever changing audience”, he says with a smile

About this track…

Against The Grain is an uplifting track combining a driving kick-drum beat with a simple, yet catchy, acoustic riff. Initially drawing the listener in with a radio frequency sample, the soft double-layered vocals and chorus synth take it further, creating a great hum along tune worth tapping your feet to.

Oh Mercy – Stay, Please Stay March 31, 2011Pop, Rock

Oh Mercy - Stay, Please Stay

Inspired by the sort of classic Australian albums which shape our history, Great Barrier Grief marks a whole new horizon for Oh Mercy, and the song writing journey of Alexander Gow. Paul Kelly, arguably Australia’s most respected songwriter, agrees, recently naming Oh Mercy in The Age EG as a new band who inspires him to write.

Two tracks from the record, ‘Keith St’ and ‘Stay, Please Stay’, will already be familiar to radio listeners. Live favourites on the road, the songs have been given a brand new life as captured by Oh Mercy and producer Mitchell Froom on the new longplayer.

With its title more than just a play on words, the second album from acclaimed Melbourne band Oh Mercy promises to be one of 2011’s most exciting releases. Eleven tracks of evocative acoustic pop, Great Barrier Grief was inspired by the Australian ‘sound’, and our way of life: the classic songs and songwriters who’ve soundtracked our lives. Timeless in feel, Great Barrier Grief is a confident, purposeful album.

About this track…

’Stay, Please Stay’ was a part of Oh Mercy’s set for six mths before it was recorded; it was always planned to be the first track on the record. Alexander re-wrote the lyrics in NY, writing like the person left at home saying goodbye to a constant traveller.

Coptic Soldier – I Hate Sleep ft. Charlie Mayfair Folk, Hip Hop

Coptic Soldier - I Hate Sleep ft. Charlie Mayfair

Coptic Soldier has gone from strength to strength over the past year, his debut EP ‘The Sound of Wings’ (a cross-genre collaborative effort with Sydney soul singer Miriam Waks) proved a huge hit on independent radio stations across the country, spending months in AMRAP’s Top 5 “Most Ordered To Air” charts.

As well as joining Phatchance on two national headline tours and supporting many of the “whose who” of Australian Hip-Hop (Bliss N Eso, Drapht, The Herd, Pez, etc), Coptic has earned a reputation for bridging the genre gap through his close collaborations with multi-instrumentalist and producer Jon Reichardt.

‘The Sound of Wings 2 (Acoustic)’ is a beautifully textured release offering glimmers of roots and folk influences. Enormously varied instrumentation including everything from saxophone to hammond organ weaves a backdrop for Coptic’s pointed social commentaries (‘Liquid Company’) and honest and self revealing lyricism (‘I Hate Sleep’, ‘Fight For The Fame’).The first single from the release ‘I Hate Sleep’ features Brisbane indie-folk sweet hearts Charlie Mayfair, the group lend their evocative harmonies to the summery, dub style beat. A deep grooving bassline and syncopated guitar rhythm set the foundations for an endearingly clever and self critical offering.

About this track…

Charlie Mayfair lend their evocative harmonies & crooning vocals to the summery, dub style beat. A deep grooving bassline & syncopated guitar rhythm set foundations for an endearingly clever & self critical offering, culminating in a pounding vocal medley
